Our client is a mission-driven, community-focused nonprofit organization committed to supporting vulnerable families. With a healthy budget and a dedicated staff, they serve thousands of constituents annually through impactful programming, advocacy, and partnerships.

Position Summary

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a critical member of the Executive Leadership Team, responsible for providing both strategic vision and hands-on financial oversight . This role is ideal for a seasoned finance leader who thrives in mission-based work, is comfortable in a fast-paced environment, and balances big-picture thinking with operational execution. The CFO will ensure the organization’s financial sustainability, regulatory compliance, and data-driven decision-making, while serving as a trusted advisor to the CEO, Board of Directors, and senior leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Partner with the CEO and leadership team to develop and implement long-term financial strategies aligned with the organization's mission and goals.
  • Provide financial insight and analysis to support strategic planning, growth, and impact.
  • Serve as lead staff to the Finance Committee, Audit Committee, and other relevant Board committees.
  • Evaluate risks and opportunities, making recommendations to enhance organizational sustainability.

Financial Management & Operations

  • Oversee day-to-day financial operations including budgeting, forecasting, accounting, cash management, payroll, and internal controls.
  • Prepare timely and accurate financial statements, dashboards, and reports for executive leadership and the Board.
  • Lead the annual budget development process in collaboration with department heads and program leaders.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, federal/state regulations, funder requirements, and audit standards.

Grants & Fund Accounting

  • Manage financial components of restricted/unrestricted grants, government contracts, and donations.
  • Monitor fund usage to ensure alignment with donor intent and regulatory guidelines.
  • Collaborate with development and program teams on proposal budgets, financial reporting, and revenue recognition.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing finance team.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Support cross-functional teams with budgeting tools, training, and fiscal insights.

Systems, IT & Facilities Oversight (optional based on structure)

  • Oversee finance systems and recommend improvements for efficiency and automation.
  • Liaise with IT and Facilities (if applicable) on budgeting and capital planning.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or MBA preferred.
  • Minimum of 7–10 years of progressively responsible financial leadership experience, including in a nonprofit setting.
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, grant compliance, and fund accounting.
  • Proven experience leading budgeting, forecasting, audits, and financial reporting.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to think strategically while managing day-to-day financial functions.
  • High emotional intelligence and team-oriented leadership style.
