Job Description

Virgin Galactic is seeking a talented and motivated Specialist Engineer/Analyst to join our team. Guided by our values, “Safety Above All”, we proactively manage the risks inherent in human spaceflight through our daily actions in the design and assembly efforts. You will bring your talent and experience in Product Safety with Aerospace or other technically demanding industries and will play a key role as a mentor to junior engineers as well as a project focal to other teams throughout the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Work with project engineering to develop Product Safety artifacts for new and existing designs.
  • Plan, execute, and report progress on safety analyses for systems and components.
  • Drive Safety Integration at all levels of Program and Engineering staff on design, integration and test matters and support other teams as needed.
  • Lead the risk identification and mitigation assessment input to production, maintenance, technical, project or program personnel
  • Work collaboratively to achieve goals and/or complete assigned tasks
  • Areas of expertise should include one or more of the following key areas:
  • System Safety Analysis (SSA)
  • Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)
  • Functional Hazard Assessment (FHA)
  • Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA)
  • Risk identification, prioritization, and management
  • Flight Safety Analysis (FSA)
  • Trajectory Analysis
  • Debris Analysis
  • Probability of Failure Analysis
  • Population Exposure Analysis
  • Flight Hazard Area Analysis

Required Skills and Experience

  • B.S. or M.S. degree in an Engineering discipline, Mathematics or Physics from an accredited university
  • 10 or more years of relevant experience in aerospace or similar field
  • Knowledge of Systems Engineering development lifecycles
  • Knowledge of software development practices and design assurance methods such as DO-178 or ARP4754 preferred
  • Knowledge of electronic hardware design assurance methods such as DO-254 preferred
  • Experience with Built-In-Test and its application to product safety preferred
  • Knowledge of FAA commercial space regulations preferred, CFR §450.
  • Detailed knowledge of the inputs and outputs of the various product safety analysis techniques
  • Experience with the system safety methods of ARP4761 or MIL-STD-882, with emphasis on hazard mitigation processes
  • Experience with Human Factors and its application to product safety.
  • Must have experience with a fault tree modeling software
  • Ability to read electrical and mechanical engineering drawings, to include schematics, wiring diagrams and assembly drawings

  • Strong statistical analysis skills preferred
  • Strong troubleshooting, organizational, and written communication skills
  • Team player with excellent communication skills both verbal and written
  • Must be self-motivated and capable of working with minimal supervision, adaptable to changing environments, and able to handle multiple tasks and/or projects simultaneously

The annual U.S. base salary range for this full-time position is $136,063–$207,596. The base pay actually offered will vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, location, and experience and take into account internal equity. Other forms of pay (e.g., bonus or long term incentive) may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
