Job Description

WHO WE ARE

Heartwood Community School is a community-focused, tuition-free charter school serving Jasper, Beaufort, and Hampton Counties in South Carolina. We believe in educating the whole child, nurturing each student academically, socially, emotionally, and physically. Honoring every child's unique journey, we bridge home and school to foster a compassionate, empowering environment where students feel seen and valued.

Our mission goes beyond academics. We guide students to become resilient problem-solvers, compassionate community builders, globally minded citizens, emotionally intelligent leaders, and lifelong learners. Embracing mistakes as part of growth, we equip students to thrive in school and life, ready to make a meaningful impact in their communities and beyond.

THE ROLE

The Instructional Coach at Heartwood Community School is a dual-role leader who both supports teacher development and provides direct small-group instruction to students. With a focus on either literacy or math (depending on expertise), the coach helps to drive instructional excellence across the school, ensuring that all students, whether they need targeted intervention or advanced enrichment, are challenged, supported, and growing. Reporting directly to the Director of Academics, this individual will serve as a key driver of instructional strategy and academic achievement.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide job-embedded coaching and feedback to teachers in areas of instructional best practices, data analysis, differentiation, and lesson planning.
  • Lead model lessons, co-teaching, and classroom observations to build teacher capacity and confidence.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Academics and the instructional leadership team to align coaching with school-wide priorities.
  • Facilitate professional development sessions and data meetings with grade-level teams.
  • Support teachers with the implementation of high-quality, standards-aligned instructional materials.

Student-Focused Instructional Support

  • Deliver small-group lessons for students who need either targeted interventions or academic extensions.
  • Use multiple forms of data, including formative and diagnostic assessments, to identify students for intervention and enrichment.
  • Design and implement individualized learning plans for students in need of academic support or accelerated learning.
  • Progress monitors student achievement and adjusts instruction accordingly.

Data-Driven Planning and Continuous Improvement

  • Maintain clear, accurate records of student progress and instructional impact.
  • Partner with teachers and school leaders to analyze student achievement data.
  • Identify instructional trends and propose strategies for improvement.
  • Support the creation of a culture of high expectations and academic excellence.

SKILLS AND CHARACTERISTICS

We are unapologetically committed to recruiting the best people in our field. We seek only those team members who set the highest standards for themselves and are passionate about making a lasting impact on the lives of children.

  • Certified educator with a minimum of 3 years of successful classroom teaching experience in literacy or mathematics.
  • Experience working with a diverse student population and a deep understanding of differentiated instruction.
  • Deep commitment to Heartwood Community School's mission and whole-child philosophy.
  • Strong coaching and leadership skills, with the ability to build trust and empower others.
  • A reflective practitioner who values feedback and continuously seeks growth.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Passion for equity and the belief that every child can achieve at high levels.
