The Central Coast Water Board is seeking an Engineering Geologist to be part of our Active Oilfields Program and coordinate with federal, state, and local agencies and the oil and gas industry to protect water quality at more than two dozen active oilfields in the central coast region.

The Central Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board (Central Coast Water Board) has an opening for an Engineering Geologist in the Active Oilfields Program. The individual coming into this position will utilize geologic and hydrogeologic engineering knowledge and technical expertise to ensure that oilfield activities are protective of water quality, especially sources of drinking water. The position location is primarily in the office located at 895 Aerovista Place, Suite 101, San Luis Obispo, CA. Occasional opportunity for telework is possible.

Salary information – CalHR salary rules allow appointment at the entrance rate (Cal. Code Regs., tit. 2, § 599.673) of a classification. For classes with alternate ranges, placement is based on education/experience.

Must have Engineering Geologist list, transfer, or reinstatement eligibility and be reachable on the certification list .

An applicant with a college degree obtained outside the United States that does meet accreditation standards must have education records evaluated by a credentials evaluation service. Evaluation of education records will be due during final minimum qualification evaluation of candidate(s). Knowledge and experience with:

• Water quality issues in the Central Coast Region.
• Geology.
• Geologic cross-sections.
• Geophysical logs.
• Oil and gas production and field activities.
• Well construction and abandonment.
• Water quality laws, policies, and regulations.
• Data management, data analysis, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
• Strong skills in verbal and written communication, critical thinking and organization.
• Reviewing and writing technical reports.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Presenting and communicating technical information.
• Collaboration and working as part of a team.

Water Board employees may be eligible for benefits. Health benefits and leave programs are available for most permanent, full-time employees, and some permanent, part-time employees. Benefit eligibility may depend on length of service and may be subject to collective bargaining agreements negotiated between the State of California and employee organizations that define wages, hours, and terms and conditions of employment.

Statement of Qualifications

A Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) must be submitted along with the State Application and serves as documentation of candidate’s ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing. It should be typed, no more than 2-3 pages in length, using 12-point Arial font , and normal margins.

Indicate your total years of experience when answering the following statements/questions:

• Describe your knowledge of and experience with water quality issues associated with the Central Coast Region.
• Describe your knowledge of and experience with geology and hydrogeology.
• Describe your knowledge of and experience with preparing geologic cross-sections and using geophysical logs.
• Describe your knowledge of and experience with oil and gas production and field activities, including well construction and abandonment.
• Describe your knowledge of and experience with water quality laws, policies, and regulations.
• Describe your knowledge of and experience with data management, data analysis, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
• Describe your knowledge of and experience with verbal and written communication.
• Describe your knowledge of and experience with reviewing and writing technical reports
• Describe your knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Describe your knowledge of and experience with presenting and communicating technical information.
